Once, Brihaspati Ji asked Brahma Ji about the reason for observing the Navratri vrat during Chaitra and Ashwin months, its benefits, and the right way to practice it. Brahma Ji explained that worshipping Goddess Durga, Mahadev, Surya, and Narayana during Navratri brings fulfillment of wishes like children, wealth, knowledge, and happiness. The vrat cures diseases, removes suffering, and brings prosperity. Those who neglect this vrat face hardships, loss, and sorrow.

The story tells of the devotee Sumati, daughter of a devotee Brahmin Pitthat, who was married against her wishes to a leper due to a misunderstanding. Despite difficulties in the forest, Goddess Durga appeared to her, blessing her and showing the power of Navratri vrat. Sumati’s devotion and fasting cured her husband’s leprosy, showing the divine grace from this sacred vrat.

The vrat involves fasting for nine days from Ashwin month’s Shukla Paksha Pratipada, worship of Goddess Kali, Lakshmi, and Saraswati, and offering fruits and flowers like jujube, nutmeg, and banana during pooja. The ritual ends with a havan (fire ceremony) using ingredients like sugar, ghee, wheat, honey, and sacred leaves. Offering donations during Navratri multiplies spiritual merit many times. Performing this vrat properly grants both worldly happiness and ultimate liberation.

Durga Navratri Pooja Vidhi

Wake up early and take a bath; wear clean clothes.
Gather the needed pooja items.
Decorate the pooja thali.
Place Mother Durga’s idol wrapped in red cloth.
Sow barley seeds in an earthen pot and sprinkle water daily till Navami.
Set the kalash in an auspicious muhurat using holy water, mango leaves, and coconut wrapped in red cloth tied with a thread. Place it near the pot.
Offer Panchopachar pooja with flowers, camphor, incense, and lamp.
Chant mantras related to Maa Durga during the nine days, pray for happiness and prosperity.
On Ashtami or Navami, perform the pooja of nine girls representing the Goddess and offer various food items like puri, chana, and halwa.
On the last day, perform Kalash Visarjan with aarti, flower, and rice offerings followed by removing the kalash from the platform.
