Know More About Mandukya Upanishad and Its Spiritual Meaning
Among the ten main Upanishads of India, Mandukya Upanishad is the shortest, with only twelve mantras. Although brief, its spiritual lessons are deep and clearly explained to guide anyone on the path to self-realization and understanding the ultimate truth.
Main Teachings of Mandukya Upanishad and the Eternal OM
This Upanishad says that the eternal essence which is present in the past, present, future, and beyond all time is shown by the sacred syllable OM. It says that OM is Brahman itself and the true Self (Atman).
The Atman shows itself in four states of consciousness — waking (Jagrat), dreaming (Swapna), deep sleep (Sushupti), and the highest state called Turiya.
- In the waking state, called Vaishvanara, the soul experiences the outside world through the senses. Life moves through different forms and is outwardly aware.
- The dreaming state, named Taijasa, is where the soul enjoys inner experiences alone, seeing impressions kept in the mind.
- In deep sleep, Sushupti, the soul is in blissful knowledge, beyond senses and faculties, full of quiet and contentment.
- The fourth state, Turiya, goes beyond these three and is the true nature of the self. It is beyond thoughts and perception, endless and peaceful, where the differences between the world, living beings, and Brahman disappear.
The sound of OM shows these four states. Its three parts match the waking, dreaming, and deep sleep states, while the silent fourth part stands for the Turiya state — the ultimate reality.
This long-lasting wisdom reminds those seeking spirituality that the path of self-discovery deeply involves these states of consciousness, leading to oneness with the supreme Brahman.
