ScienceDirect is a website that gives users access to Elsevier’s enormous bibliographic collection of scientific and medical publications. It contains about 18 million pieces of information from this publisher’s 4,000 academic periodicals and 30K e-books.
The full-text requires a subscription, however, the bibliographic metadata is available for free. Elsevier, a British-Dutch publishing house, runs ScienceDirect. It was first released in March of 1997.

There are various tools available on ScienceDirect to assist scholars with their literature searches:
- The Advanced and Expert search boxes can be coupled with refine choices to narrow down results to certain science disciplines, categories of publications, and publishing years or volumes.
- When you register with ScienceDirect, you’ll get e-mail alerts on your search results, journal content alerts, and general topic alerts, among other things.
- Your search history is displayed to help you fine-tune and choose the optimal strategy.
- Scopus and Geobase registrations are also valid with ScienceDirect. However, search histories and alerts are kept separate.
