Introducing Sankatahara Chaturthi and Its Importance
Sankatahara Chaturthi is an important festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The fervor of this vrat is evident among the faithful. This ritual is celebrated during the Chaturthi tithi, which comes twice a month. The first Chaturthi, after the new moon day, is known as Sankatahara Chaturthi, while the one after the full moon is called Varad Chaturthi.
This Chaturthi is especially important for removing difficulties and is conducted on the fourth day after Amavasya. If Sankatahara Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is referred to as Angaraka Chaturthi, which is considered highly auspicious. Many believe that fasting on this day helps remove obstacles related to planetary positions.
Every month, during the Krishna Paksha, Chaturthi falls about 3 to 4 days after Purnima. On the day of Chaturthi, during the evening twilight, devotees perform the Sankatahara Chaturthi pooja with great devotion.
How to Perform Sankatahara Chaturthi Pooja
Sankatahara Chaturthi Ritual Procedure: The Sankatahara Chaturthi vrat should be observed for 3, 5, 11, or 21 months, commencing on a Chavithi day. On the vrat day, devotees wake up early, take a holy bath, and then worship Ganesha. A piece of white or red cloth about one meter long should be placed in front of Lord Ganesha and decorated with turmeric and kumkum.
Devotees should think of their desires and place three handfuls of rice on the cloth. Then, they should keep two dry dates and two coins in a betel leaf, recalling their wishes once more, and tie it up as an offering.
Reciting the Sankatana Shana Ganesh Stotra and reading the story of Sankatahara Chaturthi is also part of the rituals. The bundle prepared should be placed before the deity, along with incense and offerings of coconut or fruits. After the pooja, one may visit a nearby Ganesh temple and perform 3, 11, or 21 circumambulations.
It is essential not to move the deity until the sun sets. After sunset, devotees bathe again, light a lamp, and offer a simple pooja to Ganesha. At the end of the ritual, prepare a rice pongal offering with the bundled rice and enjoy it later in the evening.
The Significance of the Sankatahara Chaturthi Vrat: The story tells of Indra’s chariot halting unexpectedly due to a sinner’s glance, and how fasting on this day can absolve sins and help souls reach Ganesha’s world. In different situations, it emphasizes how those who perform this vrat are believed to attain great joy and blessings from the divine.
The devotional prayers for Ganesha further illustrate the depth of faith in these practices.
