Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is a crucial scheme aimed at supporting farmers through affordable crop insurance. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW), Government of India (GoI) has continuously worked to make the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) more efficient and transparent. By focusing on auto-administration, the scheme aims to reduce manual interventions and standardize the implementation process. This is achieved through detailed Operational Guidelines (OGs) and by using advanced technology solutions.
All farmers, including sharecroppers and tenant farmers, who cultivate the notified crops in designated areas, can avail themselves of this coverage. It is important for these farmers to possess an insurable interest in the crops and lands they are growing. To qualify, they must submit necessary documents such as land records (like Records of Right (RoR) and Land Possession Certificate (LPC)) and any contracts or agreements set forth by the relevant State Government, especially for sharecroppers and tenant farmers. Additionally, these farmers must provide their Aadhaar Number and a declaration about the crops they have sown or plan to sow.
Objectives of the PMFBY Scheme
The main goals of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) are:
- To offer financial support to farmers facing crop loss or damage due to unforeseen circumstances
- To stabilize farmers’ incomes, ensuring they can continue farming
- To motivate farmers to adopt innovative and modern agricultural practices
- To enhance farmers’ creditworthiness, promote crop diversification, and boost the agriculture sector’s growth and competitiveness while safeguarding them from production risks.
