List of Banned Drugs in India 2023
The Centre Govt. of India has banned 14 fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs in the country saying that there is “no therapeutic justification” for these medicines and they may involve “risk” to people. FDC drugs are those which contain a combination of two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in a fixed ratio. The move came following recommendations by an expert committee. The Health Ministry has also issued a notification in this regard.
As per the notification issued by the Health Ministry, “And whereas, on the basis of the recommendations of the Expert Committee and the Drugs Technical Advisory Board, the Central Government is satisfied that it is necessary and expedient in the public interest to regulate by way of prohibition the manufacture for sale, sale and distribution for human use of the said drug in the country,” the notification stated.

- Amoxicillin, bromhexine
- Pholcodine, promethazine
- Chlorpheniramine maleate, dextromethorphan, guaiphenesin, ammonium chloride, menthol
- Ammonium chloride, bromhexine, dextromethorphan
- Chlorpheniramine maleate, codeine syrup
- Bromhexine, dextromethorphan, ammonium chloride, menthol
- Dextromethorphan, chlorpheniramine maleate, guaiphenesin, ammonium chloride
- Paracetamol, bromhexine, phenylephrine, chlorpheniramine, guaiphenesin
- Salbutamol, bromhexine
- Chlorpheniramine, codeine phosphate, menthol syrup
- Phenytoin, phenobarbitone sodium
- Ammonium chloride, sodium citrate, chlorpheniramine maleate, menthol syrup
- Salbutamol, hydroxyethyl theophylline, bromhexine
These FDCs are irrational and unscientific, the expert committees have said clearly. Most of the affected manufacturers were not able to prove the therapeutic rationale, safety and efficacy of their FDCs. It shows that our regulators can undo wrong decisions of the past if they put their heart to it,” All India Drug Action Network, which campaigned against irrational FDCs, said in a statement.
