GST-exempted goods mean the goods on sale/purchase or trade of which no tax will have to be paid by any of the parties to the government.Exempt supply under GST means supplies which not attract goods and service tax. In these supply no GST is charged. Input tax credit paid on these supplies will not be able for utilisation.

GST Exempted Goods which are in the list issued by the central government authority contain at least 149 items. Here is the list of 149 types of Goods that are exempt from Tax under GST with respective HSN Code and Description of Goods as per Notification No. 2/2017-Central Tax (Rate) New Delhi, the 28th June 2017.

How to Claim GST Exemption?

  • Taxpayers can report exempt GST supplies in a consolidated report through sections 8A, 8B, 8C, and 8D titled Nil Rated Supplies in GSTR-1 returns.
  • They should report the details of the exempt outward supplies in Section 3.1, titled “Tax on outward and reverse charge inward supplies”, and the details of exempt GST inward supplies in Section 5, titled “Exempt, nil and Non-GST inward supplies” in the GSTR-3B return.
  • The credit applied on exempt supplies needs to be reversed using the following formula:
  • Credit attributed to exempt supplies = Aggregate value of exempt supplies (all supplies other than taxable and zero-rated supplies) / Total turnover of the taxpayer in that tax period * Common Credit.
  • Here, common credit will be total input credit reduced by tax attributable exclusively for non-business purposes, exempt supplies, taxable supplies and ineligible credits as per regulations.

GST Exemption from Registration

  • Agriculturists
  • Person who fall in the threshold exemption limit of turnover for supply of goods INR 40 lakhs and for supply of services INR 20 lakhs and for specified category INR 20 lakh and INR 10 lakh.
  • Person who are making NIL Rated and exempt supply of goods and services such as fresh milk, honey, cheese, agriculture services etc.
  • Person making activities which are not covered under the supply of goods and services such as funeral services , petroleum products etc.
  • person making supplies those are covered under reverse charge such as tobacco leave, cashew nut(not shelled and peeled ) etc.
