Soil testing is an essential component of soil resource management. Each sample collected must be a true representative of the area being sampled. The most commonly used method for soil sampling would be based on soil types. Fields are split into sampling areas that contain similar soils. Hillsides are kept separate from bottoms since the soil types will vary. Soil survey maps, if applicable, can help organize the soil types throughout the sampling area.
Measures are taken up by Soil and Water Conservation wing of the directorate to prevent soil erosion and land degradation to build up soil productivity on sustained basis along with reclamation of degraded land. This wing also takes steps to conserve rain water within the landed area, reduce water logging, maximize recharge of ground water and increase availability of surface water.
