Steps to be Taken by the Nominee
- The nominee should visit the bank where the member held their ‘savings bank account’ linked to PMJJBY, bringing the death certificate of the member along.
- The nominee must collect the claim form and discharge receipt from the bank, or any other source like insurance company branches, hospitals, insurance agents, or designated websites.
- The nominee needs to submit the completed claim form, discharge receipt, death certificate, and a photocopy of the canceled cheque from their bank account (if available) or provide bank account details to the bank where the member had their account.
Steps to be Taken by the Bank
- Upon receiving the death intimation, the bank must ensure that the member had active coverage on the date of death, confirming that the premium was deducted and sent to the Insurance Company before the Annual Renewal Date, which is the 1st of June prior to the member’s passing.
- The bank should review the claim form and nominee details against their records and fill in the necessary sections of the form.
- The bank must submit the following documents to the designated office of the insurance company:
- Completed Claim Form
- Death Certificate
- Discharge Receipt
- Photocopy of the canceled cheque of the Nominee (if available).
- The bank has a maximum of thirty days from receiving the claim to forward the properly completed claim form to the insurance company.
Steps to be Taken at the Designated Office of the Insurance Company
- Ensure that the Claim Form is fully completed and that all relevant documents are attached. If there are any problems, contact the bank for assistance.
- If the claim is valid, the insurer’s designated office will confirm that the member’s coverage is active and check if any death claim has already been settled through another account. If a claim has been settled, the nominee will be informed, and the bank will receive a copy of this notification.
- If the coverage was active and no claim has yet been processed for the member, the payment will be made to the nominee’s bank account, with a notification sent to the nominee and a copy to the bank.
- The insurer has a maximum of thirty days from receiving the claim from the bank to approve and disburse the payment.
If the claimant submits the claim form directly at any insurer office, the insurer will forward it to the concerned bank of the deceased account holder for necessary verification. Then, the bank branch will send the claim form to the insurance company’s designated office for processing.
