Wangala Festival
The Wangala Festival in Meghalaya is one of the state’s most prominent Garo tribal festivities. The festival, which has been held every year around November since 1976, draws a large number of visitors.
Although November 13 has been proclaimed a holiday in honor of the event, the organizing committee members are concerned about the celebrations due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Their distinct cultural customs are well worth learning about. Balpakram, the Grand Canyon of the East, the Rongbang Dare waterfalls in East Garo Hills, the Bombe Wari waterfalls in South Garo Hills, the Siju caverns, and the Nengkong caves are all located in the Garo Hills.

Wangala Festival Tradition
Wangala Event is a post-harvest festival observed primarily in Meghalaya and certain areas of Assam that marks the conclusion of the farming season. Wangala is also known as the Festival of 100 Drums. It is the Garo tribe’s most important event, held just before the arrival of winter. Misi Saljong, the Sun God, is honored for the fertility of the earth and a plentiful crop. The village head, known locally as Nokma, performs ceremonies with freshly brewed beer, cooked rice, and vegetables that are offered to the god one day before the festival. The festival’s main draw is the music.
