Savitri Vrata or Savitri Amavasya is a fasting day observed by married Hindu women of Nepal and the Indian states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha on the Amavasya, the no moon day in the month of Jyeshtha. The fast is dedicated to Savitri, who saved her husband Satyavan from being taken by the death god.

Women pray by keeping a Vat Savitra fast every year on the new moon day of the Jyeshtha month. Vat Savitri fast is observed by women in North India on the new moon day of the Jyeshtha month, and by women in South India on the full moon date of the Jyeshtha month. According to tradition, by requesting Yamraj to return her dead husband’s life, this goddess Savitri brought him back to life.

Sabitri Brata Katha Odia (ସାବିତ୍ରୀ ବ୍ରତାଙ୍କ ବିଷୟରେ)

Goddess Savitri wedded Satyavan knowing that her future husband would be short-lived, according to the legendary, true, and popular Vat Savitri fasting narrative. Still, Savitri married Satyavan, claiming that she is an Indian Hindu woman who should only marry once.

When Satyavan died soon after the marriage, Goddess Savitri sat the dead husband’s head on her lap under a banyan tree. After a while, Savitri noticed Yamraj and a slew of eunuchs had come. Yamraj began to carry the soul of Satyavan, who had died, to the south. Savitri followed Yamraj after seeing this. When Yamraj saw Savitri approaching, he remarked, “O good woman, Savitri, you and your spouse were alone with you till the earth.” So you’ve decided to return. Savitri stated, “Wherever my husband lives, I must live with him; this is my wife’s faith.”

Yamraj was ecstatic to hear this response from Goddess Savitri, and he told her to ask for a blessing, and he added, “I will give you three boons.” Tell us the three brides you’d like to question. Hearing this, Goddess Savitri requested three boons: the first was an eye lamp for her blind father-in-law, the second was the lost kingdom of her father-in-law, and the third was the boon of becoming the mother of her husband Satyavan’s hundred sons. Yamraj blessed her and said, “Amen!” after hearing to Goddess Savitri’s three boons. This is going to happen.

Savitri returned to the same banyan tree for the second time. Satyavan was found dead there. Satyavan’s deceased body was infused once more. Savitri not only brought her husband back to life as a result of her fasting, but she also brought her father-in-law back the lost kingdom by providing eye-light to her mother-in-law. There has been a tradition of worshipping the Vat tree on Vat Savitri Amavasya and Vat Savitri Purnima since then. The requests of the fortunate women are granted on this day, and their good fortune continues unabated. On this day, married ladies fast and worship their spouses appropriately in order to petition to Yamraj for a long life for their spouses.

How to observe Savitri Brata Katha?

  1. Women wake up early morning on the Savitri Brata day and after taking bath, wear new clothes and ornaments including bangles. All married women wear red vermillion on the forehead, which is elongated to touch the line parting the hair.
  2. Savitri is symbolically represented by the grinding stone, locally known as Sila Pua. The grinding stone is thoroughly cleaned and worshipped. Bhoga or offering to Savitri consists of rice, wet pulses, and locally available fruits like mango, jackfruit, banana, etc.
  3. The fasting begins at sunrise and ends after sunset with the evening prayers.
  4. In some places, parents, elders, and brothers give a token amount of money to fasting women. Women take the blessing of parents and other elders.
  5. The fast is broken by consuming the offering made to Savitri.
  6. Women also make it a point to read or listen to the Savitri and Satyavan stories mentioned in the Mahabharata.
