Long ago, there was a kind king named Suketa who led a very religious life. He cared deeply for his people and ruled fairly. His wife, Suvedi, was beautiful and loving.
One day, their kingdom was attacked by powerful enemies. Unable to fight back, Suketa and Suvedi fled and took shelter in a forest. They were tired and hungry, eating whatever little they could find but still feeling hungry.
The king grew so weak that he could hardly walk and eventually collapsed. The queen comforted him by using her thigh as a pillow and prayed sincerely to God for help.
At that moment, sage Angiras passed by and found the king and queen in trouble. After hearing their story, the sage advised them to visit a sacred place called “Durga Kshetra” near Panchavati pond and worship Goddess Durga and Saraswati with full devotion.
Following the sage’s advice, Suketa and Suvedi bathed in the holy pond and performed the Shodashopachara puja, a sixteen-step ritual that lasted nine days.
On the tenth day, a yajna was done, and the couple gave ten kinds of donations as guided by the sage. Their fast ended happily, and they stayed in the sage’s ashram, where the Goddess’s blessings gave them a son named Surya Pratap.
Surya Pratap grew up learning all kinds of knowledge and became a fearless warrior. With the sage’s blessings, he defeated the enemies who had taken over his father’s kingdom and restored the kingdom to his parents. Since then, Suvedi observed this fast every year, and her family lived a happy and prosperous life.
