Odisha government invites applications for the Madhu Babu Pension Yojana (MBPY) online at ssepd.gov.in. This important scheme, launched in January 2008, merged two older schemes: the Revised Old Age Pension Rules of 1989 and the Disability Pension Rules of 1985. The Madhu Babu Pension Yojana aims to offer financial support to elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and widows in the state.
Understanding the Madhu Babu Pension Yojana
The Odisha government has included the transgender community in the MBPY, which focuses on providing financial aid to destitute elderly individuals, differently-abled persons, and widows.
Madhu Babu Pension Yojana Beneficiaries
The Madhu Babu Pension Yojana is designed to ensure social security for senior citizens and needy individuals. The major beneficiaries include:
- Old and aged individuals aged 60 years and above.
- Widows of any age.
- Women involved in divorce cases.
- Individuals affected by Hansen’s diseases/Leprosy with visible deformities, regardless of age.
- Unmarried women over thirty.
- Persons with disabilities.
- AIDS patients.
- Transgenders.
According to the notification from the SSEPD department, transgender individuals are now included as beneficiaries by amending Rule 6 (eligibility criteria) of the Madhu Babu Pension Rules 2008. Beneficiaries must provide a certificate under Section 6 of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2019. Moreover, the beneficiary’s income should not exceed Rs 40,000 per annum and should not include any member who pays income tax or works as a government servant.
Benefits for Madhu Babu Pension Yojana Beneficiaries:
A) Beneficiaries aged between 60 to 79 years will receive Rs. 500 per month.
B) Beneficiaries aged 80 years and above will receive Rs. 700 per month.
The pension is disbursed on the 15th of every month. It can be collected on JANA SEWA DIWAS in denominations of Rs 100 by the Block Development Officer (BDO) or any officer subordinate to the BDO at the Gram Panchayat office in rural areas. In urban areas, the pension is given by the District Social Security Officer (DSSO) or its subordinates at the municipal office.
