Recently, the sub-castes among forward caste Hindus and Christians might soon be recognized as separate castes. This change could increase the total number of forward castes in Kerala to 168, comprising 149 castes from Hindu communities and 19 from Christian communities.

Previously, there were only 84 recognized castes and 90 sub-castes within these forward communities. The Kerala State Commission for Economically Backward Classes has prepared a draft caste list, highlighting these developments. Together, these forward communities represent about 27.73% of the total population of the State.
