Forward caste is a term used in India, especially in Kerala, to describe the General Class/General Category/Open Category. These forward castes usually have social and economic advantages compared to other communities in the country.
Overview of Forward Castes in Kerala
Recently, the sub-castes among forward caste Hindus and Christians may soon be acknowledged as separate castes. This modification has the potential to increase the total number of forward castes in Kerala to 168, which includes 149 castes from Hindu communities and 19 from Christian communities.
In the past, there were only 84 recognized castes and 90 sub-castes within these forward communities. The Kerala State Commission for Economically Backward Classes has drafted a caste list that highlights these recent changes. Altogether, these forward communities constitute about 27.73% of the total population of the State.
