Salient Features of the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) Account

The account can be opened in the name of a girl child until she turns 10 years old.
Only one account can be opened for each girl child.
The minimum deposit amount for this account is ₹1,000 per financial year. Subsequent deposits should be in multiples of ₹100 (subject to change as per Ministry notification).
The maximum deposit allowed is ₹1,50,000 per financial year (subject to change as per Ministry notification).
If the minimum amount of ₹1,000 is not deposited in a financial year, the account will become irregular and can be revived by paying a penalty of ₹50 per year along with the minimum amount required for that year.
The interest rate, as notified by the Government, will be calculated annually on a compounded basis and credited to the account.
After the girl child turns 18, one withdrawal is allowed for education or marriage expenses, which will be 50% of the balance at the end of the preceding financial year.
The account is transferable anywhere in India from one post office or bank to another.
The account matures after 21 years from the date of opening. However, if the girl child marries before turning 21, the account cannot be operated beyond her marriage date, provided she is at least 18 years old.
