Shailputri Ashtothram Telugu - Summary
Shailputri Ashtothram Telugu is a beautiful collection of prayers dedicated to Goddess Shailputri. According to legends, she was born as the daughter of Daksha. It is known that Daksha performed the Neerishwara Yagna, and unable to bear the insult to Lord Shiva during the yagna, Goddess Shailputri sacrificed her life by setting herself on fire. After her disappearance, Shiva went into deep meditation. To defeat the demon Tarakasura, there was a need for a son of Shiva and Parvati, which is when Goddess Shailputri emerged to fulfill this divine purpose. The mountain king Himavan and his wife Mainavati were blessed when she took birth as their daughter.
Significance of Shailputri
The term “Shail” in Sanskrit refers to a mountain, and since she was born as the daughter of the mountain king, she became renowned as Shailputri. The names Himavan and Mainaka denote the mountain king and queen, respectively. We learn about Mainaka in the Sundarakanda. After taking birth as Shailputri, she performed rigorous penance and won the grace of Lord Shiva, ultimately receiving the boon to marry him. The Saptarishis and Saptamatrikas came together to talk to Himavan about Shiva and Parvati’s marriage, which brought immense joy to Himavan and Mainavati. However, a problem arose for the deities.
