National Highway
National Highways (NHs) are essential for connecting different regions of India, and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways plays a vital role in their development and upkeep. The network of National Highways in India is under the management of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This management includes the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL), and the public works departments (PWD) of the respective state governments.
NHAI is mainly responsible for the construction, upgrading, and maintenance of most National Highways. This organization operates within the framework of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. A major initiative known as the National Highways Development Project (NHDP) focuses on expanding and improving the highway network throughout the country. NHAI frequently collaborates with private companies for highway maintenance and toll collection.
State-Wise National Highway in India
- The longest National Highway is NH44, stretching an incredible 3,806 km (2,365 mi) from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu.
- The shortest National Highway is NH966B, which spans a mere 6 km (3.7 mi) from Ernakulam to Kochi in Kerala.
- The Leh–Manali Highway, connecting Leh in Ladakh to Manali in Himachal Pradesh, is recognized as the world’s second highest-altitude motorable highway.
In India, National Highways serve as regular roads, while Expressways are specialized controlled-access highways designed for smoother and quicker travel, featuring specific entrance and exit ramps.
As of April 2019, India boasts an impressive total of 142,126 km (88,313 mi) of National Highways. Although National Highways comprise just 2.7% of the country’s total road network, they carry approximately 40% of all road traffic. In 2016, the government aimed to double the highway length from 96,000 km to 200,000 km.
