NSIGSE Scheme - Summary

The National Scheme of Incentive to Girls for Secondary Education (NSIGSE) is a centrally sponsored initiative that encourages students enrolled in class IX. Launched in May 2008, this scheme aims to support girls’ education and is now easily accessible through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

Key Objectives of the NSIGSE Scheme

Objective: The main goal of the NSIGSE scheme is to create a friendly environment that boosts the enrolment of girls from SC/ST communities. It also aims to reduce dropout rates in secondary schools and ensure that these girls continue their education until they reach 18 years of age.

Who Does the NSIGSE Scheme Cover?

Coverage: This beneficial scheme includes (i) all girls from SC/ST communities who pass class VIII, and (ii) all girls completing class VIII from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, irrespective of their SC/ST status, as long as they enrol in class IX at State/UT Government, Government-aided, or Local Body schools.

Incentive Amount: Unmarried girls who meet the criteria can receive a grant of Rs. 3000/- as a fixed deposit upon enrolling in class IX. This amount can be accessed later, along with interest, when they reach 18 years of age and pass their Class X examinations.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Girls who pass class VIII and commence class IX at State/UT Government, Government-aided, or Local Body schools and belong to SC/ST communities.
  • All girls completing class VIII from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, regardless of their SC/ST status.

Accessing the NSIGSE Scheme: The NSIGSE is now available on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). This portal streamlines the process for scholarships from various Ministries and Departments, ensuring better efficiency, transparency, and reliability.

How to Apply for the NSIGSE Scheme:

  • Students from different States and UTs who pass class VIII and enrol in class IX at Government, Government-aided, or Local Body schools should register on the NSP.
  • The State authorities will verify applications online through the portal.
  • After verification, the NSP Team will provide the final list of eligible candidates to the Ministry for scholarship approval.
  • The Ministry of HRD will then allocate funds to Indian Bank and Union Bank of India, the banks responsible for implementing this scheme.
  • Funds are directly transferred to students’ bank accounts through electronic transfer under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system via the Public Financial Management System (PFMS).
