The Summer of Beautiful White Horse by William Saroyan
One bright morning, Aram is woken up at four o’clock by his thirteen-year-old cousin, Mourad, who many think is a bit strange, except for Aram. To Aram’s surprise, Mourad is proudly sitting on a stunning white horse. Aram has always dreamed of riding a white horse, but his family is too poor to own one. Despite their poverty, the Garoghlanian tribe is known for its honesty and trustworthiness. Thus, Aram believes that Mourad could never steal the horse.
Mourad’s quirky behaviour is seen as a trait inherited from their uncle Khosrov, even though his father, Zorab, is a very practical man. Uncle Khosrov is a large man who is always angry and impatient. He famously shouts for everyone to be quiet and exclaims, It is no harm, pay no attention to it. One notable incident was when his son rushed in to say their house was on fire, only for Khosrov to silence him with a loud, “Enough. It is no harm.”
Aram gets the chance to ride the horse with Mourad. The thought of Mourad stealing the horse fades away, as Aram realizes that riding it doesn’t feel wrong unless they plan to sell it. Excitedly, they share joyful rides on the horse for several hours.
After a little while, Mourad wants to ride the horse alone. Aram desires to try it as well, but when he gets on the horse and kicks it, it jumps and gallops away, tossing Aram off its back. After some time, they manage to find the horse and decide to hide it in the barn of an abandoned vineyard owned by a farmer named Fetvajian, which used to be his pride.
