Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, often called Sir MV, was one of India’s greatest inventors and engineers. He served as the Diwan of Mysore State from 1912 to 1918, and his birthday, celebrated as Abhiyantar Day, is marked across India. Born on September 15, 1860, in Muddenahalli, Chikkaballapur district, Visvesvaraya was the son of Srinivasa Shastri and Venkatalakshmamma.
Sir M Visvesvaraya’s Life and Achievements
The name Mokshagundam comes from his ancestors, who migrated from a place of the same name in present-day Andhra Pradesh before settling in Muddenahalli. In 1884, he joined the Public Works Department in Mumbai, paving the way for a career that would transform India’s irrigation systems significantly. He was later invited to join the Irrigation Commission of India, where he introduced innovative methods of water management in the Deccan Plateau.
Inspired by the works of Arthur Cotton, Sir M.V. drew motivation from the remarkable damming projects of the Kaveri River. He was particularly impressed by the renovation work carried out by Arthur Cotton on the grand dam built by Chola kings in Tiruchanapalli during the 18th century. His notable invention, the ‘Automatic Flood Gate Design’, revolutionized dam construction and was first implemented at the Khadakwasla Dam in Pune in 1903.
