The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was first notified in 200 districts starting February 2nd, 2006. Later, it expanded to 130 more districts during the financial year 2007-2008. Specifically, 113 districts were included from April 1st, 2007, and 17 districts in Uttar Pradesh (UP) were added on May 15th, 2007.

As of April 1, 2008, all remaining districts were brought under MGNREGA, ensuring that this important scheme now covers the entire country, except for those districts that have a population of 100 percent urban dwellers.

The main goal of the Act is to guarantee at least 100 days of wage employment each year to every rural household whose adult members are willing to work in unskilled manual jobs.

The Scheme, which is created by the State Government, must include the minimum features set in Schedule I. People working under any Scheme created by the State following this Act are entitled to the minimum facilities listed in Schedule II of the Act.

Furthermore, the Schemes must align with the operational guidelines provided in these Guidelines. The formulated Scheme is known as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). The use of the national name and logo is required, and it must appear on all Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials and activities.

The MGNREGA is run as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, which means the costs are shared between the Central Government and the State Governments according to the rules established in the Act.
