The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was first implemented in 200 districts starting on February 2nd, 2006. It later expanded to include 130 more districts during the financial year 2007-2008. Specifically, 113 districts were added on April 1st, 2007, followed by 17 districts in Uttar Pradesh (UP) on May 15th, 2007.
On April 1, 2008, all remaining districts were included under MGNREGA, ensuring this vital scheme covers the entire country, with the exception of districts that have a population of 100 percent urban residents.

Key Features of MGNREGS
The Scheme, established by the State Government, must adhere to the minimum features outlined in Schedule I. Individuals working under any Scheme created by the State according to this Act are entitled to the minimum facilities specified in Schedule II.
Additionally, the Schemes must follow the operational guidelines provided in these Guidelines. This formulated Scheme is termed the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). It is mandatory to use the national name and logo, which must be displayed on all Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials and activities.
The MGNREGA functions as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, meaning that costs are shared between the Central Government and the State Governments in accordance with the regulations established in the Act.
