DRDO Established - Summary
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is an important agency under the Department of Defence Research and Development in the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. As a key player in the military’s research and development, DRDO is headquartered in Delhi, India. Established in 1958, this organisation was formed by merging the Technical Development Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production from the Indian Ordnance Factories with the Defence Science Organisation.
DRDO’s Diverse Research Network
With a strong network of 52 laboratories, DRDO plays a crucial role in developing advanced defence technologies. They cover various fields like aeronautics, armaments, electronics, land combat engineering, life sciences, materials, missiles, and naval systems. This diversity makes DRDO the largest and most varied research organisation in India. The workforce consists of around 5,000 dedicated scientists from the Defence Research & Development Service (DRDS) as well as about 25,000 scientific, technical, and supportive personnel.
Evolution and Structure of DRDO
Founded in 1958, DRDO brought together the Defence Science Organisation with various technical development establishments. In 1980, a separate Department of Defence Research and Development was set up, taking charge of DRDO and its many laboratories. Over time, DRDO has often been viewed as a vendor, with the Army Headquarters or the Air Headquarters serving as their customers. Since the Army and Air Force did not have design or construction duties, they sometimes compared Indian designs, such as those from DRDO, with global offerings. For example, if they could get a MiG-21 from abroad, they would expect a similar aircraft developed by DRDO.
