According to the Hindu Panchang, every year, the festival of Dasara, also known as Vijayadashami, is celebrated grandly on the day after the conclusion of Sharannavaratri. This year, the day of Dasara falls on Wednesday, October 5th, during the Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. This sacred day is celebrated to commemorate the victory of good over evil. It is believed that on this auspicious day, Lord Rama defeated the demon king Ravana, and Goddess Durga vanquished the buffalo demon Mahishasura. That is why this festival is celebrated as Vijayadashami. On this sacred day, effigies of Ravana, Meghnath, and Kumbhkaran are also burnt. This day also marks the conclusion of Durga Puja. The Significance of Dussehra Festival
The Dussehra festival signifies the triumph of truth over falsehood. On this important day, special prayers and rituals are performed for Goddess Durga, Lord Rama, and Shami Puja. Special worship is offered to the idol of Goddess Durga, who is revered for her strength and compassion.
Dasara Pooja Vidhanam in Telugu
In Hindu tradition, festivals are usually celebrated in the morning. However, on Dasara, conducting poojas in the afternoon is considered auspicious. On this day, it is customary to place lotus leaves in the northeastern corner and chant the mantra “Aparajitaya Namah” while praying to Goddess Durga and Lord Rama. Following this, offerings of kumkum (red powder), rice, and flowers are presented as a Naivedyam (food offering) to the deity. Finally, an Aarti (song of praise) is performed for the goddess.
On the day of Dasara, it has become a tradition for men to visit the fields and sight the peacock. Elders believe that this custom has been passed down through generations. Similarly, the worship of the Jammikonda tree is important on this day. Many believe that sighting the peacock brings success in all endeavors.
