Cyberbullying is when someone uses electronic communication to bully another person by sending intimidating or threatening messages. This is a punishable offense under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Indian Penal Code. It can also include posting pictures or videos to harass someone. Many social platforms, like chat rooms, blogs, and instant messaging services, are commonly used for cyberbullying.
Impact of COVID-19 on Online Education and Cyberbullying
With COVID-19 shutting down schools across India, Education Departments have made significant efforts to ensure that learning continues through different digital platforms. Millions of students are now depending on online education, which has led to a large increase in the use of electronic devices and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Unfortunately, this also puts children and young people at greater risk of online abuse, making them more vulnerable to cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying is common and affects many children and teenagers, violating their rights to education, health, and overall well-being. The negative effects of cyberbullying can be significant, including problems with academic performance, mental health, and overall quality of life. Online bullying can disrupt teachers’ efforts to provide quality education through digital platforms and goes against the goal of creating safe, non-violent, and inclusive learning environments for everyone.
