Balamani Amma Poems - Summary
Balamani Amma was an extraordinary Indian poet known for her beautiful Malayalam poems. Some of her famous works include Amma (Mother), Muthassi (Grandmother), and Mazhuvinte Katha (The Story of the Axe). She received numerous prestigious awards and honours throughout her life, including the Padma Bhushan, Saraswati Samman, Sahitya Akademi Award, and Ezhuthachan Award.
Balamani Amma published over 20 anthologies of poems, showcasing her talent in poetry, prose, and translations. Her poetic journey began with her first poem “Kooppukai,” which was published in 1930. She gained recognition early in her career by receiving the Sahithya Nipuna Puraskaram, an award from Parikshith Thampuran, the former ruler of the Kingdom of Cochin. One of her notable poetry collections, Nivedyam, features works from 1959 to 1986, while Lokantharangalil serves as a heartfelt elegy on the death of poet Nalapat Narayana Menon.
