Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Ganesh Utsav, is one of the most loved festivals in India as it marks the birthday of Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed God of Wisdom and Prosperity, who is the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. This vibrant festival takes place on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada month in the Hindu calendar, around August and September. Celebrated with great fervor across India, especially in Maharashtra, Ganesh Chaturthi sees families inviting Lord Ganesha into their homes with clay idols. Celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi
Lord Ganesh’s birthday, known as ‘Vinayaka Chavithi’ (వినాయక చవితి), is celebrated with various rituals. On this day, devotees believe that multiple mythological tales tell about his birth and the blessings he provides. Early in the morning, it is customary to clean the house, take a fresh bath, and don new clothes. Festive decorations include mango leaves and colorful embellishments around the home. A place is prepared in the northeast or north corner of the house by drawing a yellow circle on a floor mat where the idol is placed.

In ancient times, there was a demon named Gajasura who performed severe penance to gain power. The Supreme Being, pleased with his devotion, appeared before him, asking what he desired. Gajasura requested that Lord Shiva reside in his stomach, and in a show of devotion, Shiva obliged this request. Upon learning that her husband was trapped within Gajasura, Parvati conducted a search and made a plea to Lord Vishnu to rescue Shiva. She expressed her fears and prayed fervently for his safety, and Lord Vishnu reassured her of help.
In an effort to save Shiva, a plan was devised to summon all the divine beings, and a divine cow named Nandi was decorated beautifully to march toward Gajasura’s palace with musical accompaniment. Gajasura, enchanted by the celebrations, invited the gods to come inside to dance. However, it was revealed that the purpose of this gathering was to confront him and to rescue Shiva.
As Gajasura was overpowered by Shiva’s strength, a divine child, Lord Ganesh, emerged from Parvati’s idol. Captivated by Ganesh’s beauty, both parents named him ‘Gajanan’ as he had an elephant’s head. As he grew up, he rendered affection to his parents and performed miraculous tasks, winning the hearts of everyone.
On another occasion, the gods sought to have a guardian who could eliminate any obstacles, leading to a competition between Gajanan and his brother. In a bid to establish their merits, they both sought the blessing of Lord Shiva. While the tale unfolds, it leads to the well-known story of how Gajanan is celebrated as the God of obstacles and is cherished during Ganesh Chaturthi across India.
