Importance and Timing of Mangala Gowri Pooja Vidhanam
This special pooja is done on Tuesdays during the holy month of Shravan (Shravana). Usually, newlywed women worship Mangala Gowri for five years in a row, following this tradition to keep peace and happiness in their marriage.
Step-by-Step Mangala Gowri Pooja Vidhanam Procedure
Early in the morning, the woman should take a bath and prepare the idol of Goddess Gowri using turmeric paste, dressing it with a clean cloth. All the needed pooja items should be ready beforehand.
Place uncooked rice on a silver plate and put the kalasha (pot) on top of it. Fill the kalasha with clean water and place five betel leaves along with a turmeric-covered coconut inside. The turmeric Gowri idol and, if possible, a silver idol should be placed respectfully. Also include an idol of Lord Ganesha.
Before starting the pooja, pray to Lord Ganesha to remove any obstacles. Then, give the turmeric Gowri idol a ceremonial bath by gently sprinkling milk and water.
Offer flowers while chanting the Ashothra and continue with the mangalraatri ritual, which finishes the pooja. Read the story of Mangala Gowri out loud while holding a ghee-soaked spoon above the lamp’s flame until the story ends. After that, carefully remove the spoon; the black ash on it is applied to the foreheads of all the women taking part as a sacred mark during the kumkum ceremony.
