The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was first notified in 200 districts starting on February 2nd, 2006. This was later extended to an additional 130 districts during the financial year 2007-2008, where 113 districts were notified from April 1st, 2007, and 17 districts in Uttar Pradesh (UP) from May 15th, 2007.

As of April 1, 2008, the remaining districts were also included under MGNREGA. This means that the scheme now covers the whole country, except for those districts that have a fully urban population.

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act

The main goal of the Act is to guarantee at least 100 days of wage employment each financial year to every rural household, provided that the adult members agree to do unskilled manual work.

The scheme set up by the State Government includes important features listed in Schedule I. Anyone working under any State Scheme created under this Act has the right to basic facilities mentioned in Schedule II of the Act.

Moreover, the schemes must follow the specific guidelines laid out in these operational parameters. The scheme is known as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). It is essential to use the national name and logo, which should be displayed on all Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials and activities.

The MGNREGA is carried out as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, with funds shared between the Centre and the States as specified by the Act.
