Understanding the 72 Melakarta Ragas
Melakarta ragas, sometimes simply called mela, karta, or sampurna ragas, are very important in Carnatic music. Sampurna ragas use all seven swaras, but not every sampurna raga is a melakarta raga—for example, Bhairavi is a sampurna raga but not a melakarta raga.
What Makes a Raga a Melakarta Raga?
There are exactly 72 Janaka ragas or parent ragas. Each one uses all seven notes in the scale plus the first note (Sa) in the higher octave. From these Janaka ragas, many Janya ragas are formed by either leaving out some notes or adding extra ones.
Main Rules for a Melakarta Raga:
- Includes all 7 swaras of the octave plus the Sa of the next octave.
- The same swaras appear in both ascending (arohanam) and descending (avarohanam) order.
- The swaras strictly go up in arohanam and come down in avarohanam without skipping or mixing notes.
