About the Pune Metropolitan Region
The Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) covers an impressive area of 6,914.26 sq. km, encompassing 814 villages and a total population of 73,21,367 as per the Census of 2011. It stands as the largest Metropolitan Region in Maharashtra, following Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Nagpur Metropolitan Region (NMR), and is the third-largest in India by area, after Bangalore and Hyderabad. The PMRDA serves as the planning and development authority for the Pune Metropolitan Region, focusing on encouraging growth in a systematic and orderly manner.
Details of the PMRDA Development Plan
The PMRDA Development Plan includes essential projects such as two ring roads, a high-speed railway, crescent railway, 10 metro routes, 13 multi-modal hubs, four regional centers, 15 citizen centers, 12 logistic centers, five tourism centers, five education centers, two medical research centers, and seven accident treatment centers.
Moreover, the Development Plan emphasizes environmental sustainability with projects like eight biodiversity parks, five regional gardens, and 16 public gardens. It promotes public housing and organized development by proposing 59 public housing projects and 26 town planning schemes. Additionally, the draft suggests the establishment of two industrial research and training centers.
