Understanding My Life and Mission: Swami Vivekananda

Now, ladies and gentlemen, the topic for this morning was supposed to be the Vedanta Philosophy. While this subject is indeed interesting, it is somewhat dry and vast.

However, I have been invited by your president and some of the ladies and gentlemen here to share about my work and what I have been doing. This may interest some of you, though it’s not particularly exciting for me. In fact, this will be the first time in my life that I am speaking on this topic.

To understand what I have been trying to achieve in my own small way, I would like you to imagine yourself in India. We don’t have time to delve into all the details and complexities of the subject; it’s not easy to understand the intricacies of a foreign land in just a short time. However, I will do my best to paint a little picture of what India is about.

Imagine India as a gigantic building that has fallen down in ruins. At first glance, it seems there is little hope left, as a once-great nation now appears ruined. But if you pause and look closer, you will observe something more profound beyond the ruins. The truth is that as long as the principle or ideal, which the outer man represents, remains unhurt or unbroken, there is hope. A man can survive even if his coat is stolen multiple times; he can always get a new coat. The coat itself is not essential. A wealthy man who is robbed does not see his vitality harmed—the man will endure.
