Inspirational Gujarati Children’s Story: The Lion and the Woodcutter

The Lion and the Woodcutter

There was a woodcutter named Labhu. Every day, he went into the forest and chopped wood until afternoon. Carefully, he tied his load and returned to his village. He sold the wood in the market and used the money to buy cooking supplies. His life was spent in poverty.

One day, Labhu happily went to the forest with his axe. As he was about to chop a branch from a tree, he heard a painful groaning sound. He looked towards the noise and saw an animal in pain. Labhu started walking in that direction.

Near a pond, he saw a lion groaning in pain. Oh! It was the lion, the king of the forest. Labhu knew he shouldn’t go near it. But the lion looked helpless in its eyes. Labhu gathered courage and went closer, discovering an arrow stuck in the lion’s paw and bleeding.

The lion said, “Brother, please help me. I have an arrow in my paw; kindly remove it quickly.”

Feeling pity, Labhu, though scared, stepped forward without losing courage. He pulled out the arrow from the lion’s paw. After drinking water at the pond, Labhu wet his chopped cloth and applied it over the lion’s wound. The forest had many medicinal plants. He took leaves from one plant, crushed them, and applied the paste on the lion’s injury.

The lion explained that while drinking water, some hunters tried to shoot him with arrows. He managed to escape by hiding. Though a fierce animal, the lion felt grateful to Labhu. During the day, while chopping wood, Labhu would visit the lion to check on it and apply medicine. In the evenings, he continued treating the lion.

Relationship Growth and Lesson

The next day, Labhu went earlier than usual to the forest. He saw the lion drinking near the pond. The lion said he had a good sleep that night and his health would improve in four to five days.

Labhu kept checking the wound and applying medicine. The lion started walking properly again. One evening, while Labhu was returning home with a load of wood, the lion said, “You have helped me a lot. Come, put the wood load on my back. I will take you to the village entrance.”

So for many days, though tired, Labhu placed his load on the lion’s back, and they started the journey. Labhu prepared his load while the lion carried him to the village entrance. As days passed, Labhu’s greed grew. One load became two, two became four, and he gathered more money.

News spread quickly in the village. Villagers gathered at the entrance to see Labhu with the lion. Labhu and his wife’s reputation increased, and everyone came to hear stories about the lion. The lion, the king of the forest, became like a pet who obeyed Labhu’s every word.

As kindness increased, so did Labhu’s pride. He even scolded the lion harshly many times, telling it to walk faster like a donkey. The lion, being indebted to Labhu, remained patient. However, Labhu started forgetting his kindness. Months passed.

Labhu’s human nature grew very proud. He forgot that the one he was disrespecting had great power that wouldn’t last forever. One day, the lion said, “Labhu, you have this axe, right? Please first hit my back with it.”

Labhu was shocked, but the lion said, “Don’t worry, I will say whatever you want.” Labhu struck, and blood came out. Still, the lion did not say anything.

After three to four days, the lion asked Labhu, “Tell me honestly, didn’t hitting my back feel more painful than the first wound?”

Labhu saw the wound was healing. The lion said, “This wound is not fully healed yet, but harsh words cause wounds much worse.”

Finally, a lesson came from the tree: “An axe wound can heal anytime, but wounds caused by bitter words are invisible.”
