Single Use Plastic Ban Items List - Summary
Indian Government has implemented a ban on single-use plastic items to tackle the increasing pollution in the country with a population of nearly 1.4 billion people. This ban covers various single-use plastic products like straws, cutlery, earbuds, cigarette packets, and many more. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government announced this important decision in a statement aimed at reducing plastic waste.
The Single-Use Plastics (SUP) ban by the Centre took effect on 1st July 2022. These plastics are generally used just once and then thrown away, without going through any recycling. Often, they are not disposed of properly and cannot be recycled. As per a report by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Plastic Waste Management, the global average of plastic consumption per person is 28 kg, while in India, the per capita consumption is only 11 kg. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) Report (2019-20) reveals that India generates a staggering 3.5 million metric tonnes of plastic waste every year.

- Many small businesses and entrepreneurs in India are ready to meet the growing demand for these alternatives.
- Stainless steel, made using metals like iron, chromium, and nickel, can be used instead.
- Bamboo, which grows abundantly in the country, can be a significant alternative as it is highly biodegradable.
- Wood is also biodegradable and has the potential to be one of the best alternative solutions.
