Dear Mahendra,
On 15th August, in your trademark unpretentious manner, you shared a brief video that ignited passionate conversations throughout the nation. 130 crore Indians experienced a blend of disappointment and everlasting gratitude for everything you have achieved for Indian cricket over the past decade and a half.
One way to view your cricketing journey is through the lens of statistics. You have been one of the most successful captains, playing a vital role in elevating India to the top of world cricket. Your name will forever be etched in history as one of the world’s greatest batsmen, among the best cricketing captains, and undeniably one of the finest wicketkeepers the game has ever produced.
Your reliability in challenging situations and your knack for finishing matches, most notably in the 2011 World Cup Final, will be remembered for generations to come.
Nevertheless, the name Mahendra Singh Dhoni will not merely be remembered for career statistics or defining match-winning performances. To evaluate you solely as a sportsperson would be an injustice. The true measure of your impact is as a phenomenon!
Rising from modest beginnings in a small town, you burst onto the national stage, built a stellar reputation, and most importantly, made India proud. Your journey is a source of strength and inspiration to millions of youngsters who, like you, may not have had access to elite schools or come from famous families but possess the talent to excel at the highest levels.
You embody the spirit of New India, where one’s family name does not determine destiny, but individuals create their own paths and futures.
It does not matter where we start; what counts is our destination – this is the spirit you symbolize and the inspiration you provide to young people everywhere.
Many of your unforgettable moments on the field represent a particular era of Indians. This generation is fearless, willing to embrace risks, and supports one another in challenging times – you perfectly showcased this by backing lesser-known players to shine during high-pressure scenarios, such as in the 2007 T-20 World Cup Finals.
This generation does not waver in critical moments; we witnessed this in numerous innings and matches. Our youth remains hopeful in the face of adversity and, most importantly, they embody bravery, just like the team you led. Regardless of the haircut you wore, your calm demeanor never faltered in both victory and defeat – a vital lesson for every young person.
I would also like to recognize your unique bond with India’s armed forces. You have always shown great joy in being among our soldiers, and your care for their well-being has been truly commendable.
I hope Sakshi and Ziva have the chance to spend more quality time with you. I extend my good wishes to them as well, for without their sacrifices and support, none of this would have been possible. Our youth could gain invaluable lessons from you about balancing professional and personal commitments; I recall a photo of you playing with your lovely daughter, even while everyone else celebrated a recent victory! That was quintessential MS Dhoni.
Wishing you all the best for your future endeavors.
Yours
(Narendra Modi)
