Railway Luggage Booking Rules - Summary
Luggage booking rules are important for passengers travelling by train. To ensure proper luggage management, all luggage that needs to travel by the same train with its owner must be presented at the luggage office of the booking station at least 30 minutes before the train’s scheduled departure. Additionally, passengers who book their train accommodation in advance can also book their luggage at the same time.
Luggage must be fully and legibly addressed in English or Hindi; otherwise, it won’t be accepted for booking or carriage by train. Moreover, any luggage that is not securely packed will also be rejected unless the sender or an authorized agent provides a forwarding note noting any such defects or improper packing.

Passengers should remember that luggage needs to be presented at the booking station’s luggage office at least 30 minutes prior to the train’s departure. It makes it easy for everyone if passengers book their luggage along with their accommodation in advance.
An important point to consider is the bulky luggage surcharge. This charge applies only if a package weighs more than 100 kgs or exceeds the size limit of 1m x 1m x 0.7m in external measurements. Even if a package’s weight is less than 100 kgs, if it exceeds any of the specified dimensions, it will be treated as bulky.
The applicable charges are as follows:
(a) Security Deposit of Rs. 50,000 per coach.
(b) Point-to-point fare on a round trip basis.
(c) 30% service charge on the point-to-point round trip fare.
(d) Empty haulage charge for a minimum of 200 km.
(e) Detention charge for any delay in the coach.
(f) GST at 5% of the total fare if AC and First Class coaches are used.
(g) Superfast charge for superfast services, etc.
(h) Engine detention charge if the engine is delayed in case of a special train.
