Weather Notes - Summary

Weather refers to the daily conditions of the atmosphere at a specific location, which includes elements like humidity, temperature, wind speed, and rainfall. Understanding the weather is essential as it can be described as cloudy, sunny, rainy, stormy, or clear. It plays a crucial role in the natural phenomenon that helps maintain the balance of our atmosphere. ЁЯМдя╕П

Understanding Severe Weather

When the atmospheric conditions become extreme or intense enough to cause property damage or loss of life, we refer to it as severe weather. This type of weather can vary widely due to altitudes, latitudes, and pressure differences across regions. Tornadoes, cyclones, heavy rainfall, fog, and winter storms are examples of severe weather that can be disastrous and hazardous. Therefore, effective disaster management and safety strategies are vital to cope with these conditions.

Elements of Weather:

  • Wind speed
  • Humidity
  • Temperature
  • Rainfall
  • Thunder
  • Snow
  • Lightning

Factors Affecting Weather:

  • The sun is responsible for all weather changes. Its high temperature and massive sphere of hot gases make it the main source of heat and light for the Earth, greatly influencing the weather.
  • The energy reflected and absorbed by the EarthтАЩs surface, oceans, and atmosphere plays a significant role in defining the weather at any given location.
  • Gases such as methane, water vapour, and carbon dioxide also influence weather conditions.

Instruments Used to Measure Components of Weather:

  • The temperature of a place is measured using a thermometer. A Maximum Minimum Thermometer (MMT) is used to record the highest and lowest temperatures.
  • A rain gauge, also known as an omreometer or puliometer, is used to measure rainfall, typically expressed in millimetres or centimetres.
  • An anemometer measures the speed and direction of the wind.
  • Humidity is defined as the quantity of moisture in the air and is measured using a hygrometer.

The Climate of a Place:

Meteorologists record daily weather conditions, and these records are kept for many years. By analyzing these records, we can determine the pattern of the weather. The average weather pattern observed over a long duration is known as the climate of the place.
