  1. In 1986, during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s tenure, the first National Policy on Education was announced, advocating for a “radical restructuring.” This policy aimed at offering equal educational opportunities to promote national integration and boost cultural and economic development.
  2. Also in 1986, the government led by Rajiv Gandhi introduced a revised National Policy on Education, which emphasized removing disparities and ensuring equal educational opportunities, particularly for Indian women, Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Scheduled Castes (SC).
  3. The National Policy on Education was modified in 1992 by the P. V. Narasimha Rao government, while in 2005, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh adopted a new policy reflecting the “Common Minimum Programme” of his United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.
  4. In 2019, the Ministry of Human Resource Development released a Draft New Education Policy, which included extensive public consultations. This Draft NEP aimed to reduce curriculum content to improve essential learning skills, critical thinking, and a more holistic approach to learning through discussions and analysis. It proposed a shift from the traditional 10+2 system to a more child-centric 5+3+3+4 system design. On 29 July 2020, the cabinet approved a new National Education Policy intended to bring significant changes to the existing Indian education framework.
