Essential Commodities List 2020
The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020 passes by the Rajya Sabha which is aimed at deregulating commodities such as cereals, pulses, oilseeds, edible oils, onion, and potatoes.
After the amendment bill, the supply of certain foodstuffs — including cereals, pulses, oilseeds, edible oils, potato — can be regulated only under extraordinary circumstances, which include an extraordinary price rise, war, famine, and natural calamity of a severe nature.
The EC (Amendment) Bill 2020 aims to remove fears of private investors of excessive regulatory interference in their business operations. The freedom to produce, hold, move, distribute and supply will lead to harnessing of economies of scale and attract private sector/foreign direct investment into the agriculture sector. It will help drive up investment in cold storage and modernization of the food supply chain.
