During dinner on his third evening, I felt his eyes on me as I explained Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ, which I had been busy transcribing. At seventeen, being the youngest at the table, I often thought my words went unheard. This made me pack as much information into as few words as possible. Speaking quickly made me seem nervous, as if I were struggling to be clear. After finishing my explanation, I noticed a sharp gaze from my left. It thrilled and flattered me; he seemed truly interested—he liked me. It wasn’t as hard as I thought. But when I finally turned to meet his stare, I was met by a cold and icy look—hostile and unyielding, almost cruel.
This completely broke me. What had I done to deserve such treatment? I wanted his kindness again, to laugh with me as he had days before, like on the quiet train tracks, or when I told him that B. was the only town in Italy where the bus line carrying Christ flew by without stopping. He had chuckled then, recognizing the hidden joke from Carlo Levi’s book. I loved how our thoughts seemed to run side by side, how we could almost guess what the other was thinking before holding back the words.
It was clear he would be a difficult neighbor. Better to keep my distance, I thought. Just to think I had almost been drawn to the softness of his hands, his chest—his whole being—his eyes, which, when they looked kindly, felt like a miraculous awakening. You could never look long enough but always felt the need to keep staring to discover the mystery behind their depth.
