Significance of Engineers Day 2025

Engineers Day celebrates the creativity, problem-solving skills, and commitment of engineers who build the infrastructure and technology driving India’s progress. Across the country, many events and activities recognize their important role in shaping modern society and motivating future generations.

Life and Achievements of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya

Born in Muddenahalli village in today’s Karnataka, Sir M.V. showed talent from a young age. Even after losing his father at 15, he continued his studies and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Madras University in 1881 and an engineering degree from College of Engineering, Pune.

Sir Visvesvarayya’s engineering skills led him to develop innovative irrigation systems in the Deccan region and design automatic weir water floodgates first used in 1903 near Pune. These floodgates helped control reservoir water levels safely and were later installed in other major dams across India.

He also designed flood protection systems for Hyderabad and protected Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion. His work on the Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) dam across the Kaveri River created Asia’s largest reservoir at the time. Known as the “Father of Modern Mysore”, he established Asia’s first hydroelectric power plant at Shivanasamudram in 1894 and started important industrial ventures like the Mysore Soap Factory and Bhadravati Steel Factory.

Sir M.V.’s Role in Mysore and Contributions to Education

After retiring from government service in 1908, Visvesvarayya was made Diwan of Mysore state. Working with Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, he led major development projects, including steel mills and hydroelectric power plants, which greatly boosted the state’s economy. He also helped start the Government Engineering College in Bangalore in 1917, which later became the well-known University Visvesvarayya College of Engineering (UVCE).

His dedication earned him many honors such as knighthood, honorary doctorates, and fellowships from Indian and international institutions. He also served as president of the Indian Science Congress in 1923.
