All participants, whether male or female, should follow certain rules devotedly when observing this Vratham:
- On the Monday of the Vratham, take a holy bath and observe fasting until the end of the ritual. If fasting is challenging, try your best to follow the guidelines.
- On the day of observance, bathe in the morning and fast. In the evening, just before sunset, bathe again to purify yourself. Prepare a Lingam of Lord Shiva using mud from a clean location. Gather the necessary worship items as described later and perform the worship ritual with sixteen offerings, concluding by immersing the Lingam in water with a Brahmarpanam.
- After completing the Vratham, offer a donation to a Brahmin and seek his blessings. Then, listen to the stories associated with the Vratham.
- For the offering, prepare Gulapavate (sweet dumplings) using roasted wheat, ghee, jaggery, and cardamom. Divide this preparation into three parts for the offering, and after the storytelling, feed one portion to a cow. The remaining part of the Prasad should be shared among all family members. Those participating in the Vratham should not consume anything other than the Prasad on this day. Immerse the Lingam in a river, pond, or well.
- After observing the sixteen Mondays without missing any rituals and fully adhering to the guidelines, observe the ritual a final time on the seventeenth Monday to reap the complete benefits.
- After completing the Vratham, chant the Shiva Panchakshari mantra 108 times. If possible, reciting it 500 or even 5000 times is highly rewarding.
- Participants should consume light meals on that day and avoid meat, alcohol, and any discussions about marital happiness. Also, refrain from negative speech.
