PMSSY Guidelines - Summary

The Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY/Scheme) is a vital Central Sector Scheme introduced in August 2003. Its main goal is to correct imbalances in the availability of tertiary healthcare services and enhance the quality of medical education across India.

Components of PMSSY

PMSSY has two key components:
(i) Establishment of AIIMS-like Institutions
Each new AIIMS will include:
  • State-of-the-art modular OTs and diagnostics facilities.
  • 15-20 super specialty departments.
  • 750 beds.
  • 100 UG (MBBS) seats.
  • 60 B.Sc. (Nursing) seats.
  • A strong focus on PG education and research.

A total of 22 new AIIMS have been announced under this component:

  • 6 AIIMS are already functional.
  • Status of AIIMS approved under PMSSY.
  • 16 more AIIMS are announced, out of which 15 have been approved by the Cabinet.
(ii) Upgradation of Government Medical College (GMC)/Institutions

Every upgradation project will introduce:

  • 8-10 super specialty departments.
  • About 15 new PG seats.
  • 150-250 additional beds.

This initiative aims to resolve the regional imbalances in the access to affordable and reliable tertiary healthcare services while also improving the facilities for quality medical education in the country.
