During the hearing, board lawyer Lakshmi Gupta explained that the board had decided to add one extra candidate with approval from the education department due to an incorrect question in the 2014 TET. This led to the successful appointment of 269 more teachers.

Details on the CBI Investigation

The Calcutta High Court has now directed the CBI to investigate alleged irregularities regarding the selection of these 269 teachers for State-run primary schools. Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay ordered the president of the WB Board of Primary Education, Manik Bhattacharya, and the Secretary to appear before the CBI.

In his ruling, Justice Gangopadhyay called the second panel, referred to as the Additional Panel by the Secretary, illegal, stating that it had appointed the candidates through questionable methods. He has instructed that the salaries of these teachers be halted and that they be barred from entering their workplaces.

Petitioners claimed that the 269 candidates received extra marks for an incorrect question in TET, which affected around 23 lakh aspirants. Justice Gangopadhyay has also asked the CBI to investigate at least ten other cases of alleged irregularities in the hiring of teaching and non-teaching staff by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education in state-run schools.

The judge highlighted the influence of certain powerful entities, stating that local police may not be able to investigate corruption cases fairly and impartially.
