About Kanyashree Prakalpa

The Government of West Bengal has launched the Kanyashree Prakalpa to protect and promote the rights of girl children in the state. This scheme aims to enhance the status and well-being of girls, particularly those from poor socio-economic backgrounds, by motivating them to pursue their education and delaying marriages until they turn 18, which is the legal age of marriage.

Kanyashree Scheme Details

The Kanyashree Prakalpa offers a safety net for vulnerable families who might otherwise be compelled by tradition, social pressures, or poverty to end their daughters’ education early and push them into illegal and risky marriages. Through Conditional Cash Transfers, this scheme helps improve the lives of girls in various ways, including:

• Encouraging them to stay in school for a longer duration and finish their secondary or higher secondary education or equivalent in vocational courses, thereby enhancing their social and economic prospects.
• Discouraging marriages until at least the legal age of 18, which helps reduce the chances of early pregnancies and related health risks, such as maternal and child mortality, as well as malnutrition issues.

Kanyashree Prakalpa Financial Assistance

• This scheme provides Conditional Cash Transfers and has two main components:
• K1 – Annual Scholarship of Rs. 1,000/- (One Thousand only)
• K2 – One Time Grant of Rs. 25,000/- (Twenty-Five Thousand only)
• Girls can qualify for Kanyashree’s Annual Scholarship or the One-Time Grant by being enrolled in one of the following types of institutions:
  • 1) In-Class VIII or above in a school, Madrassah, or an equivalent course.
  • 2) In a college, Vocational Training Centre, Technical Training Centre, or Industrial Training Centre.
• The educational institution MUST be registered and recognized by the Government of West Bengal.
