MHRD (PRAGYATA) Guidelines for Online Classes - Summary
Download the MHRD (PRAGYATA) Guidelines for Online Classes PDF here. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruptions in normal life, especially with the closure of schools, affecting over 240 million children in India currently enrolled in educational institutions. Prolonged school closures can lead to a serious loss of learning.
To address the challenges posed by the pandemic, schools need to rethink and reshape the methods of teaching and learning. It is important to create a balanced approach that incorporates both online and offline learning experiences.
MHRD PRAGYATA Guidelines for Digital Education
The MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) has recently launched PM e-Vidya, a nationwide initiative aimed at streamlining all efforts related to digital and online education. This innovative campaign encompasses several key programs, including DIKSHA (one nation – one digital platform), TV (one class-one channel), SWAYAM (online MOOCs covering various subjects), IITPAL (an exam preparation platform), AIR (community radio and CBSE Shiksha Vani podcasts), and specialized study materials for differently-abled students developed by NIOS. All these e-learning resources will be expanded and improved systematically by the MHRD over time.
The Union government suggests that pre-primary children should have a maximum of 30 minutes for sessions aimed at guiding their parents. For students in Classes 1 to 8, the recommendation is to conduct up to two sessions of 30 to 45 minutes each. Meanwhile, students in Classes 9 to 12 should not have more than four online classes, each lasting 30 to 45 minutes.
Furthermore, the guidelines emphasize that teachers should not be overburdened. “School leaders should not expect teachers to engage in six to eight hours of online teaching daily. They should instead aim for about two to three hours of online activities each day for the classes they teach,” the PRAGYATA guidelines state.
