Assam Child Marriage Case List - Summary
Assam is facing a significant challenge with child marriage, and the government is determined to tackle this issue. The Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has announced the official numbers of child marriages reported across 36 police districts in the state. Dhubri has the highest cases, with over 350 instances. In 2022-23, the teenage pregnancy rate in Assam reached an average of 16.16%, with Barpeta district topping the list at 28.30%. Alarmingly, Dhubri and South Salmara districts also reported high rates at 26.8% and Goalpara at 23.39%.
The Assam government’s initiative follows a survey by the health department that uncovered troubling statistics revealing that around 31% of girls in Assam were married before reaching the legal age of 18. In contrast, the national average stands at 23.3% for women married before turning 18.
