Akbar Birbal Stories
Akbar was once infuriated with Birbal and banished him from his kingdom. Birbal travelled to a faraway village and assumed a new identity and started working as a farmer. After a couple of weeks, Akbar started to miss Birbal and hence asked his soldiers to find where he is and bring him back to the kingdom.
Birbal was appointed by Akbar as a Minister (Mantri) and used to be a Poet and Singer in around 1556–1562. He had a close association with Emperor Akbar and was one of his most important courtiers, part of a group called the navaratnas (nine jewels).

Akbar and Birbal’s First Meeting
Once Akbar went deep into the woods, with his companions, hunting wild animals but with no luck. Tired and thirsty, they decided to visit the nearby village and met a young local boy named Mahesh Das who readily agreed to help them.
The boy had no idea who Akbar was, so he cross-questioned him when Akbar asked the little boy what his name was. Seeing his confidence and cleverness, Akbar gave him a ring and asked him to meet him when he grows up. Later the boy realized that it was a royal ring and he had just met Emperor Akbar.
After few years, when Mahesh Das grew up, he decided to visit Akbar’s court. He was standing in a corner in the court when Akbar asked his noblemen which flower they think is the most beautiful flower on earth. Some answered rose, some lotus, some jasmine but Mahesh Das suggested that in his opinion it is the cotton flower. The entire court started laughing as cotton flowers are odorless. Mahesh Das then explained how useful cotton flowers are as the cotton grown from this flower is used to make clothes for people in summers as well as in winters.
Akbar was impressed with the answer. Mahesh Das then introduced himself and showed the Emperor the ring he had given years ago. Akbar happily appointed him as one of the noblemen in his court and Mahesh Das came to be known as Birbal.
Fools List
Akbar sometimes demanded strange things. One day he gave a bizarre order to Birbal to find him six biggest fools in their kingdom in a month’s time. Birbal respectfully agreed to Akbar’s order and left the place to carry out the order as directed.
As he was riding his horse, looking for people, first he met a man named Ramu who was sitting on a donkey and carrying some grass on his own head thiking that it would help share the load of the poor animal.
Then he met two people, Changu and Mangu, who were fighting because Changu said he will release his imaginary tiger on Mangu’s imaginary cow which they are going to get as a gift from the god.
In the evening Birbal met someone who was trying to find his lost ring in the lit area when actually the ring had fallen next to a faraway tree; but since it was quite dark there, the man thought of finding the ring in a lit area instead.
Birbal took the four of them to Akbar the next day. When Akbar asked who are the remaining two fools, Birbal pointed to himself and to Emperor Akbar for undertaking such an endeavor.
Birbal’s Guru
When Akbar’s guru paid him a visit from Mecca for a few days, it starts to intrigue Akbar to find out the details of Birbal’s guru who has tutored such a wise person. So when he questioned Birbal about his master’s whereabouts, Birbal informed him that his guru always remained silent and never goes out. Akbar insisted Birbal to introduce him to his guru.
On the way back, Birbal saw a humble woodcutter and pleased by him, Birbal converted his attire to that of a Brahmin and made him sit on the pedestal of a big temple and directed him to remain silent under all circumstances. When Birbal brought Akbar to meet the monk, Akbar decided to test the monk and lure him with gold.
But following Birbal’s directions, the monk paid no heed to Akbar’s repeated offers and continued to meditate. Angrily Akbar left the monk alone thinking him to be a fool. Among the many Akbar Birbal stories for kids, this one happens to be their favorite.

सबसे बड़ी चीज
एक बार की बात है, बीरबल दरबार में मौजूद नहीं थे। इसी बात का फायदा उठा कर कुछ मंत्रीगण बीरबल के खिलाफ महाराज अकबर के कान भरने लगे। उनमें से एक कहने लगा, “महाराज! आप केवल बीरबल को ही हर जिम्मेदारी देते हैं और हर काम में उन्हीं की सलाह ली जाती है। इसका मतलब यह है कि आप हमें अयोग्य समझते हैं। मगर, ऐसा नहीं हैं, हम भी बीरबल जितने ही योग्य हैं।”
महाराज को बीरबल बहुत प्रिय थे। वह उनके खिलाफ कुछ नहीं सुनना चाहते थे, लेकिन उन्होंने मंत्रीगणों को निराश न करने के लिए एक समाधान निकाला। उन्होंने उनसे कहा, “मैं तुम सभी से एक प्रश्न का जवाब चाहता हूं। मगर, ध्यान रहे कि अगर तुम लोग इसका जवाब न दे पाए, तो तुम सबको फांसी की सजा सुनाई जाएगी।”
दरबारियों ने झिझक कर महाराज से कहा, “ठ.. ठीक है महाराज! हमें आपकी ये शर्त मंजूर है, लेकिन पहले आप प्रश्न तो पूछिए।”
महाराज ने कहा, “दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी चीज़ क्या है?”
यह सवाल सुनकर सभी मंत्रीगण एक दूसरे का मुंह ताकने लगे। महाराज ने उनकी ये स्थिति देख कर कहा, “याद रहे कि इस प्रश्न का उत्तर सटीक होना चाहिए। मुझे कोई भी अटपटा सा जवाब नहीं चाहिए।”
इस पर मंत्रीगणों ने राजा से इस प्रश्न का उत्तर देने के लिए कुछ दिनों की मोहलत मांगी। राजा भी इस बात के लिए तैयार हो गए।
महल से बाहर निकलकर सभी मंत्रीगण इस प्रश्न का उत्तर ढूंढने लगे। पहले ने कहा कि दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी चीज़ भगवान है, तो दूसरा कहने लगा कि दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी चीज भूख है। तीसरे ने दोनों के जवाब को नकार दिया और कहा कि भगवान कोई चीज नहीं है और भूख को भी बर्दाश्त किया जा सकता है। इसलिए राजा के प्रश्न का उत्तर इन दोनों में से कोई नहीं है।
धीरे-धीरे समय बीतता गया और मोहलत में लिए गए सभी दिन भी गुजर गए। फिर भी राजा द्वारा पूछे गए प्रश्न का जवाब न मिलने पर सभी मंत्रीगणों को अपनी जान की फिक्र सताने लगी। कोई अन्य उपाय न मिलने पर वो सभी बीरबल के पास पहुंचे और उन्हें अपनी पूरी कहानी सुनाई। बीरबल पहले से ही इस बात से परिचित थे। उन्होंने उनसे कहा, “मैं तुम्हारी जान बचा सकता हूं, लेकिन तुम्हें वही करना होगा जैसा मैं कहूं।” सभी बीरबल की बात पर राजी हो गए।
अगले ही दिन बीरबल ने एक पालकी का इंतजाम करवाया। उन्होंने दो मंत्रीगणों को पालकी उठाने का काम दिया, तीसरे से अपना हुक्का पकड़वाया और चौथे से अपने जूते उठवाये व स्वयं पालकी में बैठ गए। फिर उन सभी को राजा के महल की ओर चलने का इशारा दिया।
जब सभी बीरबल को लेकर दरबार में पहुंचे, तो महाराज इस मंजर को देख कर हैरान थे। इससे पहले कि वो बीरबल से कुछ पूछते, बीरबल खुद ही राजा से बोले, “महाराज! दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी चीज ‘गरज’ होती है। अपनी गरज के कारण ही ये सब मेरी पालकी को उठा कर यहां तक ले आए हैं।”
यह सुन महाराज मुस्कुराये बिना न रह सके और सभी मंत्रीगण शरम के मारे सिर झुकाए खड़े रहे।
कहानी से सीख –
इस कहानी से हमें यह सीख मिलती है कि हमें कभी भी किसी की योग्यता से जलना नहीं चाहिए, बल्कि उससे सीख लेकर खुद को भी बेहतर बनाने की कोशिश करनी चाहिए।
हरे घोड़े की कहानी
एक शाम राजा अकबर अपने प्रिय बीरबल के साथ अपने शाही बगीचे की सैर के लिए निकले। वह बगीचा बहुत ही शानदार था। चारों ओर हरियाली ही हरियाली थी और फूलों की भीनी भीनी खुशबू वातावरण को और भी खूबसूरत बना रही थी।
ऐसे में राजा को जाने क्या सूझा कि उन्होंने बीरबल से कहा, “बीरबल! हमारा मन है कि इस हरे भरे बगीचे में हम हरे घोड़े में बैठ कर घूमें। इसलिए मैं तुम्हें आदेश देता हूं कि तुम सात दिनों के अंदर हमारे लिए एक हरे घोड़े का इंतजाम करो। वहीं अगर तुम इस आदेश को पूरा करने में असफल रहते हो, तो तुम कभी भी मुझे अपनी शक्ल न दिखाना।”
इस बात से राजा व बीरबल दोनों वाकिफ थे कि आज तक दुनिया में हरे रंग का घोड़ा नहीं हुआ है। फिर भी राजा चाहते थे कि बीरबल किसी बात में अपनी हार स्वीकार करें। इसी कारण उन्होंने बीरबल को ऐसा आदेश दिया। मगर, बीरबल भी बहुत चालाक थे। वो भली भांति जानते थे कि राजा उनसे क्या चाहते हैं। इसलिए वो भी घोड़ा ढूंढने का बहाना बनाकर सात दिनों तक इधर-उधर घूमते रहे।
आठवें दिन बीरबल दरबार में राजा के सामने पहुंचे और बोले, “महाराज! आपकी आज्ञा के अनुसार मैंने आपके लिए हरे घोड़े का इंतजाम कर लिया है। मगर, उसके मालिक की दो शर्तें हैं।”
राजा ने उत्सुकता से दोनों शर्तों के बारे में पूछा। तब बीरबल ने जवाब दिया, “पहली शर्त यह है कि उस हरे घोड़े को लाने के लिए आपको स्वयं जाना होगा।” राजा इस शर्त के लिए तैयार हो गए।
फिर उन्होंने दूसरी शर्त के बारे में पूछा। तब बीरबल ने कहा, “घोड़े के मालिक की दूसरी शर्त यह है कि आपको घोड़ा लेने जाने के लिए सप्ताह के सातों दिन के अलावा कोई और दिन चुनना होगा।”
यह सुन राजा हैरानी से बीरबल की ओर देखने लगे। तब बीरबल ने बड़ी सहजता से जवाब दिया, “महाराज! घोड़े का मालिक कहता है कि हरे रंग के खास घोड़े को लाने के लिए उसकी यह खास शर्तें तो माननी ही होंगी।”
राजा अकबर बीरबल की यह चतुराई भरी बात सुनकर खुश हो गए और मान गए कि बीरबल से उसकी हार मनवाना वाकई में बहुत मुश्किल काम है।
कहानी से सीख –
यह कहानी हमें यह सिखाती है कि सही सूझबूझ और समझदारी के साथ नामुमकिन लगने वाले काम को भी आसानी से किया जा सकता है।
