॥శ్రీ సత్యనారాయణ వ్రతకథ॥
॥అథ ప్రథమాధ్యాయము॥
శ్లో॥ ఏకదా నైమిశారణ్యే ఋషయశ్శౌనకాదయః।
ప్రపుఛ్ఛరానతం మునయ సర్వే సూతం పౌరాణికం ఖలు॥
ఒకసారి కొనకాది మహామునులు నైమిశారణ్యంకి వెళ్ళి అక్కడున్న సూతమహామునిని దర్శించారు. వారు ఆయనతో “ఓ స్వామీ! సకల ఐశ్వర్యములు, పుత్రపౌత్రాభివృద్ధి, మోక్షం కలిగించే వ్రతం ఏదైనా తెలపండి” అన్నారు దానికి వారు. “ఓ శౌనకాది మహామునులారా! పూర్వం ఇదే ప్రశ్న నారదులవారు విష్ణుమూర్తిని అడిగారు. ఆ విశేషాలు చెప్పుతాను శ్రద్ధగా వినండి.అన్నారు. పూర్వం యోగీశ్వరుడైన నారద మహాముని లోక క్షేమం గురించి సకల లోకములు తిరిగాడు. అన్ని చోట్ల అందరు ఆనందంగానే ఉన్నారు కాని భూప్రపంచమైన మనుష్యలోకంలో మాత్రం అందరూ ఏదో రకమైన బాధలు పడటం గమనించాడు. ఆ దు:ఖం మనస్సుకి సంబంధించింది కావచ్చు, శరీరానికి సంబంధించింది. కావచ్చు, ధనధాన్యాం కోసం కావచ్చు. కారణమేదైనా దుఃఖశాతం ఎక్కువే. ఇది చూసిన నారదముని చాలా విచారించి, తక్షణ కర్తవ్యం కోసం సరాసరి విష్ణుమూర్తి దగ్గర కెళ్ళాడు. అచ్చట నిర్మల శరీరకాంతితో నాలుగు చేతుల లో శంఖ, చక్ర, గదా పద్మములు కలిగి సర్వాలంకృతుడైన విష్ణుమూర్తిని దర్శించి భక్తితో పూజించి “ఓ పరమేశ్వరా! నీవు అపరిమితమైన శక్తి గలవాడవు. సర్వలోకాలకు మేలు చేయగల వాడవు : భక్తుల కోర్కెలు తీర్చగలవాడవు.” అనగా విని “భక్తా ఏమి నీ కోరిక ?” అన్నాడు విష్ణుమూర్తి.
