Paradise Lost Book 1 - Summary
In Paradise Lost Book 1, we see Satan and his fallen angels awakening in Hell after their defeat in Heaven. They join forces and build a stronghold known as Pandemonium. Within this dark council, they strategize on how to challenge God again. While some of the fallen angels are eager for revenge and want to escape Hell, others fear facing God, knowing they will suffer even more if they lose. Ultimately, Satan decides to use cunning tricks and deceit to plot against God. He hears whispers that God has created a New World with Man as a new being. If they can bring chaos to this new race, they believe they can strike a severe blow to God’s plans.
Exploring the Journey of Satan
Satan takes on the mission to leave Hell and find out more about this new creation. At the gates of Hell, he encounters Sin and Death, discovering that Sin is both his daughter and bride, while Death is their offspring. Satan promises to return and let Sin and Death roam freely on Earth. He breaks free into Chaos and, after a conversation with Chaos himself, finds his way to the World, which dangles from Heaven by a golden chain. Once in the World, Satan begins his search for Man.
Understanding the Essence of Paradise Lost
This first Book briefly lays out the entire subject of man’s disobedience and the resulting loss of Paradise. It then touches on the main reason for his downfall—the Serpent, or more accurately, Satan in the form of the Serpent. Having turned against God and luring many angels to follow him, Satan is commanded by God to leave Heaven and descend into the great Deep. After this significant event, the Poem hurries to the core of the story, presenting Satan and his fallen angels now trapped in Hell. They are not in the center but rather in a place of complete darkness aptly named Chaos. Here, Satan and his followers are found lying on a burning Lake, in shock and disbelief. After some time, Satan recovers from his confusion, summoning the angel who lies next to him. They discuss their unfortunate fall. In the end, Satan awakens all his legions, who until now have remained in the same state of daze. They rise, ready to form their battle array, naming their principal leaders based on the idols known later in Canaan and surrounding regions.
