A CBI inquiry has been ordered into the 2014 Primary TET corruption case in West Bengal, and the situation is unfolding rapidly. The Calcutta High Court recently declared that the recruitment list published in 2017 was illegitimate, resulting in the dismissal of 269 teachers from their positions. In a strict measure, the court also prohibited these 269 teachers from entering schools and suspended their salaries.
The Calcutta High Court has directed the CBI to initiate a case by 5:30 pm on June 13, emphasized by a bench led by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay. Both the secretary and president of the primary education board have been called to appear before the CBI on the same day.

On June 13, a single-judge panel of the Calcutta High Court commanded a CBI investigation into the recruitment of primary teachers by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE) for the 2014 batch. This development poses another challenge for the West Bengal administration, particularly concerning the education sector. Justice Avijit Gangopadhyay noted that the court ordered the dismissal of 269 candidates who were appointed as primary school teachers. The reason behind this decision is quite shocking: it was found that these candidates were hired despite failing the written examination, with some not even appearing for it.
The single-judge court instructed the WBBPE to cease salary payments to these 269 candidates immediately and ensure that they are barred from entering the schools where they had been placed. In 2017, WBBPE had released a revised merit list for the 2014 recruitment examination, which included these 269 individuals, allegedly granting them an extra mark due to a question paper mistake.
The officials from WBBPE argued that the additional mark was granted because of an error in the question paper. However, this reasoning did not satisfy the court, as Justice Gangopadhyay pointed out that it unfairly favoured these 269 candidates over the 23 lakh other participants who took the same examination. Consequently, the court dismissed the amended merit list issued by WBBPE in 2017.
Justice Gangopadhyay also ordered WBBPE President Manik Bhattacharya and Secretary Ratna Chakraborty (Bagchi) to report to the CBI’s Kolkata office by 5:30 pm on the same day, bringing all relevant documents to address inquiries.
Presently, the CBI is already probing irregularities in the recruitment process conducted by the West Bengal School Service Commission for various teaching and non-teaching posts (WBSSC). Former Education Minister and Trinamool Congress Secretary-General Partha Chatterjee has been questioned multiple times by the CBI regarding this issue.
